A record of the errors uncovered and corrected in various Copper Beacon stories.

Our (corrected) mistakes.

  • Young Folly - October 21, 2023

In “Lake Effect farmstand fills food access gap in Copper Harbor,” we initially had Melissa Young-Millsap’s name all wrong. We’re embarrassed about it and apologize.

  • Wonderful-Lee Coordinated - August 28, September 1, 2023

In “Calumet Community Free Fridge offers fresh produce to address food insecurity in Keweenaw,” we omitted Lee Peterson from the list of volunteer coordinators. We also misspelled Ron Rea’s name. Our apologies for the mixup!

  • Prohibit-Me-Not - July 5, 2023

In “Residents wanting solar panels face stumbling blocks,” we wrote that Hancock’s new solar and wind ordinance entirely prohibits industrial solar, but that isn’t the case. It restricts industrial solar to I-1 industrial districts and requires permits. We apologize for the confusion.

  • Two-for-One - July 4, 2023

In “Michigan Tech fires deans of two largest colleges, offers no explanation” we inadvertently suggested Janet Callahan told us she was given no explanation for her dismissal, but in fact another source, David Hemmer, was speaking in plural, and to our knowledge does not have authority to speak on Callahan’s behalf. We sincerely apologize.

  • Plurality Faux Pas - July 2, 2023

In “Michigan Tech fires deans of two largest colleges, offers no explanation” we implied that David Hemmer said both interim deans learned of their new positions through public announcements, but he was only sure of one. We apologize for any confusion this has caused.

  • Chemical Confusion - June 16, 2023

In “Houghton Taco Bell closed due to high carbon monoxide levels”, we accidentally shared the chemical formula as CO2, rather than its proper CO. A clear error. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

  • Misplaced Commission Meeting - May 9, 2023

In “Fitzgerald’s smoker in peril”, we shared that the next Keweenaw Road Commission Meeting would be at the Keweenaw County Courthouse in Eagle River, however, it actually took place at the road commission’s offices in Mohawk. We deeply apologize for any confusion this caused.

  • Oops, We Did It Again - March 22, 2023

In “Librarians Protect Our Right to Choose What We Read”, we once again mis-pronouned PLDL Director Katrina Linde-Moriarty. Our humblest apologies for this repeated error and any discomfort or confusion it may have caused.

  • Ni/na - November 21, 2022

Our reporter mistakenly spelled the name of Dexter, Michigan-based Tiani Body Care as ‘Tiana’. We’re sorry for any confusion this may have caused.

  • Unlinked — November 3, 2022

Miriam requested the following be added before publication, but it was only added afterward: “Check out the late fall schedule at the Finnish American Folk School website https://www.finlandia.edu/fahc/finnish-american-folk-school/. The connections made through the gallery over the years will continue to bring good regional teachers to the local area.”

  • Improperly pronouned — October 22, 2022

In “For the love of learning, for all”, PLDL Director Katrina Linde-Moriarty was given the improper pronoun in one sentence. It has been rectified, and we offer our deepest apologies for the error.

  • Fuzzy wording on felines – October 5, 2022

The wording of the second sentence in Claw and Order was updated to be more accurate and specific, from “House cats are considered an invasive species and can be damaging to the ecosystem.” to “Domesticated cats living outdoors are often considered an invasive species, as they can cause significant damage to the ecosystem.”
