Why subscribe?

Copper Beacon is a small newsletter, dedicated to bringing the best in original reporting and analysis to the Keweenaw community. We care about this community and think that trustworthy media can’t wait any longer. We’re also nearing the formation of a new, board-driven, nonprofit news source to enable greater, more transparent, and in-depth coverage in the future.

News that meets you where you are

Every new edition of the newsletter goes directly to your inbox. No sifting through an algorithm-driven feed looking for a little local news. The regular, free newsletter will publish weekly Saturday night, and be waiting in your inbox Sunday morning to inform your week ahead and review the week behind.

Support the crew

We’re starting with this weekly newsletter, and working to grow into a nonprofit that can feature not just quality written journalism, but streaming audio and video, engaging infographics, and daily content. Subscribe to the paid newsletter to help us grow our offerings.

Why are we called ‘Copper Beacon’?

First and foremost, the name ties us to this place. Both the mining industry and lakeshore are tied into the mental imagery of the name, and we wanted to choose a name that spoke to the reader about the origin of the news they read.

Secondly, ‘beacon’ is a historically used name for some newspapers, and we wanted to reflect some of the traditional journalism values that we’re trying to carry forward into the future.
